About Anima Marsicana

Anima Marsicana is an event catalog for the Marsica: a historic region in Abruzzo, nestled between the Apennine mountains and the plain of Lake Fucino. Our goal is to bring together all cultural, traditional, sporting, and artistic events happening across the area in one easy-to-browse place.

The Marsica

The Marsica is a region within Abruzzo, historically inhabited by the Marsi, an ancient Italic people. Today it encompasses the territory around Avezzano — the largest city in the area — and dozens of smaller towns including Celano, Tagliacozzo, Pescina, Magliano de' Marsi, Luco dei Marsi, Trasacco, and Ortucchio.

The landscape is extraordinary: the vast plain of the former Fucino lake (drained in 1875 and now one of Italy's most fertile agricultural areas), surrounded by peaks exceeding 2,000 metres such as Monte Velino (2,487 m) and Monte Sirente (2,348 m), and bordered to the south by the Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise, home to wolves, Marsican brown bears, and Apennine chamois.

Culture and Traditions

The Marsica has a rich cultural heritage: medieval hilltop villages, Romanesque churches, Angevin-era castles, and a calendar packed with local sagre (food festivals), historical re-enactments, open-air theatre, and trekking events.
